Biography

This is a summary of the life of Steve McQueen based on the book
"Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Hero" by Marshall Terrill

"HUMBLE BEGINNINGS 'My life was screwed up before I was born' was how
he summarized it."

"Terrence Steven McQueen was born in Beech Grove, IN to Jullian Crawford
and "Red" William McQueen...His father was a stunt pilot for the
flying circus...His mother was a teenage runaway and alcoholic when she
gave bith to him...she got caught up in a whirlwind romance with
William...He left when Steve was six months old...Jullian found herself broke,
jobless and left with no other alternative than to return (to her home
town) with her tail between her legs...Eventually Jullian left him there
in Slater with his grandparents...He felt both of his parents had deserted him."

"Steve was semi-deaf and dislexic. He joined the marines when he was
young. He was honorably discharged."

"He was too young, too vital, too crazy"

"With his short hair, sharp blue eyes and an expression which seemed
to suggest he found the world a satirically amusing place...In his
acting, Mr. McQueen had a deceptively casual and prewheeling style."

"He was an extraordinary man, complicated and heartbreaking...I'm not
sure he had really grown up either."

"Steve had the ability to make something difficult look easy."

"Steve had a style of his own. He learned as he went along and he
only got better."

"Steve was a really simple guy. He didn't like being a movie star.
When a crowd gathered around him, he had the greatest gift of sneaking
away."

"He squeezed everything into his life..."

"And we have certainly made heroes of far lesser men."

"The Boys Republic received $200,000 from Steve's estate (when he died).
It always had a special place in his heart."

The plaque at The Boys Republic McQueen center reads "Steve McQueen
came here as a troubled boy but left here as man. He went on to
achieve stardom in motion pictures but returned to his campus often to
share himself and his fortune. His legacy is hope and inspiration to
those students here now, and those yet to come."

Steve McQueen died of something other than cancer. I believe
it was a blood clot. He did have cancer but his family and doctors
believed he had beat it. He was in remission when he died.

His ashes were spread over the Pacific Ocean.
